Highlights

We recommend taking a "long bath" in lukewarm water. A "long bath" means taking a long bath in lukewarm water (30 to 70 minutes) and then quickly jumping into a hot bath to warm up. By soaking in lukewarm water for a long time, you can absorb the hot spring's ingredients into your entire body, and by relaxing while bathing, your parasympathetic nervous system becomes dominant, allowing you to relax mentally as well.

Hot Spring Specialties

The inn is also popular for its dishes made with ingredients that are healthy for the eyes
Kaikake Onsen serves local banquet cuisine centered around seasonal mountain delicacies. Local wild vegetables and river fish such as char are used, and original dishes such as medicinal brown rice porridge made with brown rice, goji berries, carrots, corn, sweet potatoes, pumpkin, green beans, red beans, and sesame seeds, as well as red salmon, which is said to be good for the eyes, and yogurt with blueberry sauce are also available. The light Kansai-style flavors are also pleasant to eat, and are gentle on the body.

Hot Springs

Hot springs for the eyes have had remarkable health benefits since ancient times
Kaikake Onsen is said to have been discovered by the Zen priest Hakuun during the Kamakura period, about 700 years ago. Eventually, word of the hot spring's efficacy spread and the number of visitors seeking medical treatment increased, it became an object of worship, and a Yakushi Nyorai statue and stone lanterns were erected. During the Sengoku period, it is said that Uesugi Kenshin healed the wounds of his soldiers here, and in the Edo period it became popular as a hot spring for treating eye ailments. From the Meiji period to the early Showa period, "Kaikake eye drops" were also sold. Even today, it is known as an onsen for the eyes, effective for cataracts, retinal hemorrhage, dry eyes, and other conditions.
