Hot Spring Specialties

Iwamuro Onsen Senbei rice crackers have been popular for a long time due to their delicious taste.
The hot spring's specialty is the simple "Iwamuro Onsen Senbei" rice crackers, which have been hand-baked for many years. The third-generation owner of Kofujiya, who traveled around the country to hot springs, was inspired by Gunma Prefecture's "Isobe Onsen Senbei" rice crackers, and after extensive research, created this famous confectionery as a local flavor. Its light, crispy texture, melt-in-your-mouth texture, and slightly sweet flavor make it a long-selling favorite. The patterns embossed on each cracker are also related to Iwamuro, giving it a retro feel.

Iwamuro, where the monk Ryokan lived and walked
Ryokan was a Soto Zen monk in the late Edo period, a calligrapher, a tanka poet, and a Chinese poet. He is said to have been born as the successor to the headman of Izumozaki, but became a monk at the age of 18. After 12 years of training at Entsu-ji Temple in Okayama Prefecture, he set out on a long journey. From the Kansei era, he stayed in a hermitage in the forest of Kokujo-ji Temple on Mt. Kokujo, close to his hometown, for about 20 years. The hermitage was called Gogo-an, and was said to have been a simple thatched roof with a width of two bays. As he trained, he also went to Iwamuro Onsen and Mase to beg for alms, and interacted with people, leaving behind many poems and calligraphy, and stone monuments with his haiku have been erected in various places.
