Hot Spring Specialties

Oyu Onsen Kouta and Oyu Geisha
In the heyday of Oyu Onsen, there were many geisha houses and as many as 100 geisha. The song "Oyu Onsen Kouta" was born at that time, and Keiko Wakamiya released a record. It is still sung with the lyrics "Miyama Uguisu Yu no Ka Ni Nosete" (The smell of the deep mountain nightingale rises from the bath), and the lyrics "Charariko, charariko, zaburanran" ("Charariko, zaburanran") describe the bathing scene. Even now, geisha perform dances to the kouta at banquet halls in inns.

Hot Springs

Silver mine development in the Edo period and Echigo Oyu Hot Springs
Oyu Onsen is said to have been discovered by the monk Gyoki in 718, and has a history of 1,300 years. During the Edo period, silver was discovered upstream of the Tadami River, and the Ueda Silver Mine and Shiramine Silver Mine mines were opened, attracting people from all over the country. Of the eight post towns along the Ginzan road, Oyu Onsen boasted the best volume and quality of hot water. Since the Meiji period, it has been a popular hot spring resort for farmers from nearby areas.
