Hot Spring Specialties

"Red Yakisoba" is popular in Kiri no Onsen Town
Akakura Onsen is famous for its thick fog, as the hot spring town is located at an altitude of about 800m. In addition to the negative ions generated by the fog, the fantastical scenery of Mt. Myoko, the Kubiki Plain, and even Sado Island floating in the Sea of Japan, which can be seen floating behind the mist and haze, is also soothing. Another local specialty is the B-grade gourmet dish "Red Yakisoba," dyed bright red with highland vegetables such as tomatoes and red peppers. The chewy noodles contain rice flour and are surprisingly not spicy, making them a favorite for people of all ages and genders.

Hot Springs

Hot springs managed by the Takada clan
Mount Myoko, one of Japan's 100 famous mountains, is a sacred mountain for mountain worship. Akakura Onsen was once the domain of Betto Hozoin Temple of Sekiyama Sansha Gongen, and was a sacred place off-limits to the general public as a place for worshipping Mount Myoko. Times changed, and in 1815 the Takada Domain gave permission for development, and the hot springs were successfully drawn the following year. Opened at great expense as a domain-run hot spring, over a dozen inns opened, and the area eventually developed into a post town on the Hokkoku Kaido road and a hot spring resort. It is a hot spring with a deep history, with many inns still in operation today from the time of its opening.
