Hot Spring Specialties

The sulfurous smell of Unzen Onsen makes it even more delicious
Unzen Jigoku is filled with white smoke and the smell of sulfur. The eggs steamed in this steam have a taste that can only be found in a hot spring area. The soft, fluffy egg white gives off a faint scent of sulfur. The salt that comes with the egg is made from the hot spring. One of the famous sweets that represents Unzen is "Yusenpei." Invented by Matsudaira, the former lord of Shimabara, these rice crackers are made by adding hot spring water to flour, eggs, and sugar and baking them, resulting in a slightly sweet, crispy rice cracker with a light texture.

Hot Springs

The Shogunate's ban on Christianity and the tragic story of Unzen Hell
Unzen Jigoku is famous as the setting for the tragic martyrdom of Christians. In 1625, feudal lord Matsukura Shigemasa began persecuting Christians under orders from the shogunate. By 1627, the oppression intensified, and by 1630, Christians were forced to convert or face torture in the boiling hot spring pits under the pretext of 'Yamairi.' Twenty-six believers were martyred in this way. To honor their souls, the Unzen Martyrs' Festival is held every May. Around 2,000 believers from within and outside the prefecture gather to make a pilgrimage to the Christian Martyrs' Monument in Unzen Jigoku, offering prayers and hymns.
