Hot Spring Specialties

A specialty manju from the hot spring area associated with Issa
The specialty of Yudanaka Onsen is the "Issa Manju" from Nakamuraya Confectionery, which was founded in 1891. The small buns have a brown skin made with black sugar and a smooth bean paste filling, with a subtle saltiness and refined sweetness that is exquisite. The product's name comes from the fact that Kobayashi Issa often stayed at Yudanaka Onsen in his later years. Yudanaka Onsen has developed the "Issa Walking Path," and on the grounds of the inn "Yudanaka Yumoto" where Issa stayed, there is the "Issa Isen-sui Memorial Haiku Museum Yukuntei."

Hot Springs

A favorite resort of the Matsushiro clan
Yudanaka Onsen boasts a history of over 1,350 years, and flourished as a post town on the Kusatsu Kaido road. After Sanada Saneyuki became the lord of Matsushiro, it became part of the domain's territory, with the head inn located at Goten no Yu, and it also became a resort for the lord. It is said that some of the successive lords were so fond of Yudanaka Onsen that they even took the trouble to bring the hot spring water back to their castles. Within the hot spring town, you can still see buildings that retain the atmosphere of those times.
