Hot Spring Specialties

The reborn local dish "Chanoko"
Oyaki made with buckwheat flour skin is called "chanoko" and has been a staple food in Otari for a long time, but the skin quickly becomes hard and is not popular with everyone. So local elderly people tried to improve it, and by kneading in buckwheat flour with local flour and boiled potatoes, they succeeded in creating a soft and chewy texture and the unique flavor that only buckwheat flour can provide. The filling is also seasoned to match the buckwheat, and it has now become one of the brands of the foothills of the Northern Alps.

Hot Springs

Walking the Hakuba Salt Road
The "Salt Road" once flourished as an artery for transporting goods from Itoigawa on the Sea of Japan coast to Matsumoto. It is well known that Uesugi Kenshin used this road to send salt to his arch enemy Takeda Shingen during the Sengoku period. Historical remains such as the cobblestone road, stone Buddha statues, cowherd lodges and cow tying stones remain, making it a popular hiking course. Every year in early May., the "Salt Road Festival" is held, where people walk along the Salt Road connecting Otari Village, Hakuba Village and Omachi City, and anyone is welcome to participate.
