Hot Spring Specialties

Sekiya Koshiro Miso aged for 2 years
The "Fukeikan" inn in Yamada Onsen, one of the hot spring resorts in Shinshu Takayama, makes "Sekiya Koshiro Miso," an exquisite homemade miso that is carefully aged for two years. The miso barrels are a secret recipe passed down from the fifth-generation owner, Sekiya Koshiro, that has remained unchanged for 50 years. The inn uses it in miso soup and other dishes, but it is also sold as a souvenir at the shop. "Yamadera Miso" and "Bean-flavored Miso" are also popular items.

Hot Springs

A promenade designed to resemble a tea garden in the valley
The Mai no Michi Promenade is a walking trail that treats Matsukawa Valley as a tea garden. It is about 1.3 km long and takes about 30 minutes to walk, starting from the foot of the striking bright red Takai Bridge and reaching above the Yamada Onsen Yakushido. Enter through the Rojimon Gate, where a monument to Yosano Akiko's poem stands, and pass through the Nakamon Gate and Machiai before arriving at Shofuan, a gazebo where the owner is waiting. The murmuring of the Matsukawa River and the chirping of the birds are pleasant to the ears, and in autumn the trail is decorated with autumn leaves.
