Hot Spring Specialties

Handmade Yunohana
Yunohana is a cloudy white deposit that occurs when sulfur in hot springs solidifies when exposed to air. Records show that yunohana harvesting was already popular around 1934 at Norikura Kogen Onsen. Even now, yunohana here is harvested by hand. The yunohana must be harvested by climbing the mountain, dried in the sun, and crushed into powder, so annual production is limited. It is a popular souvenir from Norikura Kogen, and if it sells out you'll just have to wait until the next year.

Hot Springs

The four seasons of Mount Norikura and the Norikura Plateau
The Norikura Plateau, which stretches from 1,200 to 1,500 meters above sea level on the eastern foot of Mt. Norikura, is a region with beautiful nature in every season. In spring, as the snow melts, skunk cabbage begins to bloom. This is followed by new buds on the trees, and the plateau is filled with flowers such as red lily of the valley and three-leaf quince. When the rainy season ends, water shields bloom at Oike Pond, and the plateau is filled with flowers such as Japanese karamatsusou, Japanese anemone, and marubukitake. Every year from mid- to late Sep., the rowan trees around the Oyukidake glaze turn red. The plateau's autumn foliage begins to change color in early Oct..
