Hot Spring Specialties

Shiga Kogen's newest attraction: Hiradoko Large Fountain
Along the national road between Kumanoyu Hotaru Onsen and Kido Pond, Shiga Kogen's "Hiratoko Daihosen" emits billowing steam. It has now become a symbol of Shiga Kogen, and in autumn the surrounding area is a great spot for taking photos of the autumn leaves. One of the hot springs that gushed forth here in 1991 is the source of Hotaru Onsen, and the area around the fountain has been developed into a hot spring park.

Hot Springs

The best time to see the Genji fireflies in Shiga Kogen is midsummer
Shiga Kogen is also famous as the habitat of Genji fireflies, a natural monument. It is the highest habitat in Japan, and is also known for the longest period in Japan for larvae to come ashore and for the longest period for adult emergence, as well as the longest life span of adults. The name "Hotaru Onsen" is said to have originated from this, and fireflies can be viewed from mid-Jul. to mid-Aug.. Even outside of mountainous areas, fireflies can be viewed near lodgings, and you may have a fantastical experience of soaking in a hot spring in a space filled with dancing fireflies while looking up at the starry sky.
