Recommended souvenirs from Kumanoyu Onsen
Nemagaridake bamboo is the bamboo shoot of Chishima Sasa and is a specialty of Shiga Kogen. It is harvested in season at the local Kumanoyu Ski Resort and carefully bottled and sold as souvenirs. It is a popular homemade product with limited quantities, and because it spoils easily, it is always processed on the same day. The soap made with Kumanoyu hot spring water and sold at the hotel is also popular for its elegant fragrance. The "bear repellent bell" is a souvenir that can only be found here.

Hot Springs

Kumanoyu Onsen discovered by Shozan Sakuma
It is said that in 1848, Sakuma Shozan, an official of the Matsushiro Domain in the late Edo period, discovered the hot springs while surveying the Shiga Highlands for plans to cut down forests and plant trees, and recommended that they be opened. In his "Kutsuno Diary," he wrote, "I dipped my hand into the water to test it, and found that it was indeed a good hot spring," and reported the hot springs to the domain, stating that they were similar to Kusatsu Onsen. The hot springs are said to have been named "Bear's Hot Springs" after an old story that a wounded bear healed its wounds in the hot springs in the valley. In 1882, Yamamoto Yasokichi established a bathhouse.
