Hot Spring Specialties

Shintsuru Salt Yokan and Shinshu Rice Crackers
Souvenirs from Kami-Suwa Onsen include "Shio Yokan" and "Shinshu Rakken." "Shio Yokan" is made using carefully selected Tokachi red beans and local Chino agar, kneaded over oak firewood, a method that has been passed down since the shop's founding. It has a light saltiness and a refined taste with a subdued sweetness. "Shinshu Rakken" is a confectionery presented to Suwa Taisha Shrine, a wheat flour rice cracker baked with finely chopped peanuts. The thinly baked rice cracker has a crispy, fragrant, nostalgic taste.

Hot Springs

Kami-Suwa Onsen, the domain bath of the Takashima domain
In the Edo period, Kami-Suwa Onsen on the shores of Lake Suwa was home to four Kami-Suwa baths (Shojin-yu, Mushi-yu, Kowada-no-Hirayu, and Yunowaki-Hirayu). Mushi-yu was reserved for samurai only and was also known as Steam-yu. It is said that the lord of Takashima, who ruled this area, also bathed there, but today only a monument stands marking the site of Mushi-yu. The other three baths remain today as public baths, but Kowada-no-Hirayu is reserved for local residents only. Hotel Nunohan has also been in operation since the Edo period, and at the time was a village inn where village officials from within the domain stayed.
