Shiga Kogen is surrounded by mountains, so you can see a star-filled sky all year round. From Happo Onsen, located at an altitude of 1,600m, you are so close to the stars that you feel as if you could reach out and touch them. The starry sky of Shiga Kogen, where the Milky Way is clearly visible, is impressive for city dwellers who don't usually look up at the stars. Bring a star chart and spend some time checking out each of the constellations unfolding in the night sky.

The origin of the name "Hoppo"
Hoppo Onsen was discovered in 1841. It came to be called "Hoppo" during the Meiji period, and the name is said to have originated from the "poppo" sound of steam rising, or the "konkon" sound of the hot spring gushing forth. Another interesting theory is that the name comes from a traveler who, having walked a long way to this place, finally arrived and wrote the following poem: "The sun is setting, my legs are tired, my stomach is empty, and sweat is pouring out, hoppo hoppo."
