Hot Spring Specialties

笹を皿に多彩な具を載せた素朴なご馳走
北信濃の県境付近では殺菌効果の高い熊笹を皿にした「笹の葉寿司」が昔から伝わり、ハレの日などに作られる。白馬周辺では、地元産のきのこや山菜、くるみ、塩味のアクセントとなる漬物などに、油揚げや酢締めの鱒、あるいはちくわやハム、カニかまぼこやシーチキンなど、好みの具を添え、軽く押して仕上げる素朴なもの。北信濃の笹寿司は、新潟との県境方面の謙信寿司も有名だが、白馬周辺では富山の影響を受けた具も見られる。

登山やスキーとともにある温泉
1906年頂上小屋として開設された「白馬山荘」は、国内初の山小屋で、日本の近代登山の幕開けとともに白馬岳登山は脚光を浴びた。またドイツ語教師福岡孝行によりオーストリアのスキーが伝えられ、登山ブームを支えた白馬の山案内人に広まるとともに、雄大な自然と調和したスキー場開発や、スキー指導員の育成に繋がっていく。現在も夏の登山、冬のスキーで賑わい、たくさんの温泉施設がその疲れを癒してくれる。
