Hot Spring Specialties

Hot Springs and Matsutake Mushrooms: A Luxurious Way to Enjoy Autumn
Bessho Onsen is also known as a matsutake mushroom producing area. In autumn, matsutake mushrooms can be found in abundance in the red pine forests that grow wild in the surrounding mountains. Matsutake huts are dotted around the mountains, and in the pine forest you can eat rustic dishes that feature matsutake mushrooms, such as grilled whole matsutake mushrooms, matsutake rice, matsutake tea in earthenware pots, and matsutake tempura. In some places, you can even enjoy mushroom hunting.

Hot Springs

Bessho Onsen, known as the Kamakura of Shinshu
Shiota County, where Bessho Onsen is located, has been the political and cultural center of Shinano Province since ancient times. The name Bessho is said to have come from the fact that Taira no Tomomori prayed to Kitamuki Kannon to slay an ogre woman and successfully defeated her, so he built a "betegyo" (a modern-day villa) here and called it Bessho. Later, due to the tactics of Kiso Yoshinaka, many of the temples in Bessho were burned down, but the burned-down temples were rebuilt by Minamoto no Yoritomo and then by the Shiota Hojo clan. As a result, with many ancient temples from the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, the area came to be known as the "Kamakura of Shinshu."
