Hot Spring Specialties

Freshly made hot spring manju every day
A recommended souvenir from Asama Onsen is the "Asama Onsen Manju". There are two types, brown sugar and soba, and the soba one is filled with cherry blossom bean paste. The cute face on the manju wrapper was designed by Rokusuke Nagai, and they are also sold individually. If you order at your accommodation the day before, they will deliver freshly made manju the next morning, so it's a good idea to take advantage of this service.

Hot Springs

Asama Onsen, the former palace hot spring of the Matsumoto clan
Located almost in the center of Nagano Prefecture, Asama Onsen has been loved as the inner sanctum of Matsumoto. In the Edo period, Gotenyu was established by the first feudal lord, Ishikawa Kazumasa, and as villas were built one after another for the castle lord and his vassals, it came to be known as "Matsumoto's inner sanctum." The site of Gotenyu's guardhouse is now a day-trip hot spring facility called Yuyuan Biwa no Yu, which is being looked after by the descendants of the first bathhouse keeper, Ishikawa Shoko. Valuable materials from that time, such as the bathhouse register and the castle lord's kamishimo, are on display inside the museum.
