Hot Spring Specialties

Aoshima Senbei, a classic Miyazaki souvenir
Aoshima Senbei is a confectionery that uses cream to represent the waves crashing on Aoshima Island and thin rice crackers to represent the wavy rocks that surround it (commonly known as Oni no Sentaku Iwa). The nostalgic combination of thin wheat flour rice crackers and fresh cream has been a long-selling product since the 1960s, when Miyazaki was experiencing a honeymoon boom. In addition to the traditional two types of cream, white and nut, three new flavors have been added: Miyazaki-grown hyuganatsu, mango, and strawberry. It was also awarded the Takamatsunomiya Prize, Honorary President of the 19th National Confectionery Exposition.

The strangely shaped rock formations, designated as a natural monument, are called "Oni no Sentakuita" (Devil's
The wavy rocks surrounding Aoshima are known as "Devil's Washboard" and are designated as a national natural monument. Officially known as "Upraised Seabed and Deformed Wave Erosion Scars," they can be found around Aoshima and along the coastline of Nichinan Coast. Rocks that were underwater a long time ago emerged above the water due to geological changes, and as they were eroded by waves and seawater, they took on their current shape. At low tide, the rocky surface, reminiscent of the mysteries of nature, appears 100m offshore along the coastline, making for a spectacular sight.
