Highlights

It is famous for its effects on the eyes, and since ancient times it has been said that "the wound is the tip of the sickle, and the eye is the ohara". There is a rock bath called Katsura no Yu along the Shiroishi River.

Hot Spring Specialties

Shiraishi specialty, Shiraishi umen (warm noodles)
Shiroishi City, where Obara Onsen is located, is famous for its Shiroishi umen (warm noodles). Umen is a type of somen, but its texture and taste are different from regular somen. Hand-pulled somen noodles are usually made with oil, but umen is characterized by the fact that it does not use oil. Its shape is also shorter than somen (9cm), making it easy for small children and the elderly to eat, and it is thicker than somen, so it does not stretch easily and you can fully enjoy the wheat flavor. Dried noodles are also sold as souvenirs.

Hot Springs

A stroll through the Jasper Creek can be enjoyed in each season
Heading upstream from National Route 113 to the Shiroishi River, the Hekigyokukei Valley spreads out before you. It was named after the intellectual Tokutomi Soho, who visited here during the Meiji period and was impressed by the clear blue color and jewel-like beauty of the water. Along the national route, there is a monument bearing Soho's words. The vibrant green of the water is a delight to look at in the new green season, and the river breeze is pleasant in summer. The autumn leaves are spectacular, and the snowscape has the feel of a ink painting. The Obara Promenade is located in the surrounding area, and beautiful views appear one after another, including Shiraito Falls, Oyako Falls and Taiko Bridge, Nyudo Rock, and Onsen Shrine.
