A simple traditional Kokeshi doll given to a child by a woodworker
In Naruko, woodworkers made kokeshi dolls for children about 200 years ago and gave them to them, building on the tradition of them being toys for children in mountain villages. Naruko kokeshi dolls make a sound when you turn their heads, and are characterized by their taut shoulders and bodies that taper in the middle and then widen at the bottom. Many of them feature patterns of stacked chrysanthemums or diamond chrysanthemums, and are painted with melon-shaped heads, bangs and innocent expressions. Along with five other varieties in Miyagi Prefecture, they have been designated as a national traditional craft as "Miyagi Traditional Kokeshi." The adorable figures of young girls painted in vivid brushstrokes on plain wood are once again making them popular. (Source: Naruko Onsenkyo Tourism Association)

Hot Springs

Legend of Minamoto no Yoshitsune in "Naruko
Legend has it that Minamoto no Yoshitsune, pursued by Minamoto no Yoritomo, went to Hiraizumi and took his pregnant wife with him. Benkei played the role of a midwife at Kamewari Pass, and "Kamewakamaru" was born. Kamewakamaru did not cry in childbirth, but when he was soaked in the hot water on the riverbank, he finally cried out, and since then the area has been called "Nakiko," leading to the present name of the place. There is a monument at the Naruko Onsen Shrine, a story about a monkey who served amazake (sweet sake) to a group of people camping out in Jingamori, and many legends about Yoshitsune, including the place names "Hoshinuma" and "Urezen" (urine front).
