It is said that when the foot soldiers of the Date Domain ate these manju at a teahouse on a mountain pass while on their way to Edo, their feet became lighter, and they became popular among their friends and eventually came to be called "Ashigaru Manju". It is said that due to its deliciousness, it was recognized as a specialty of the Date Domain and was allowed to use the name "Date Domain Ashigaru Manju".

Yajiro Kokeshi Craftsmen's Village
Yajiro Kokeshi Village is a settlement of Yajiro Kokeshi craftsmen known throughout the country. It is located about 2km into the mountains from Kamasaki Onsen, across Kokeshi Bridge. The settlement is said to have begun when a man named Yajiro settled in the area. Yajiro Kokeshi dolls are characterized by their large heads and bodies, which make extensive use of wheel patterns, and are descended from Shichikashuku, where woodturning was first carried out within the Sendai domain. Kokeshi dolls are still made in this area, preserving these traditions, and you can even experience painting a kokeshi doll.
