Hot Spring Specialties

The famous gourmet dish "Akiu Ohagi"
"Akiu Ohagi" sold at the supermarket "Shufu no Mise Saichi" is a hot spring specialty. It is handmade with no additives, using high-quality red beans from Hokkaido and glutinous rice from Miyagi Prefecture, and is simply seasoned with just salt and sugar. The graininess of the rice is exquisite with a subtle yet moderate sweetness. The "tsubuan" is thoroughly coated with bean paste and is an overwhelmingly satisfying treat. Other variations include "kinako" and "sesame". It is a popular item, with around 5,000 sold a day, and the expiration date is the same day, so be sure to get some while you're there to try it. Hot Springs

A historic hot spring that dates back to the late Kofun period
Akiu Onsen has a long history, said to have begun around the time of Emperor Kinmei, during the latter part of the Kofun period. Emperor Kinmei was delighted to have been cured of his skin disease, and even expressed this in a song. This was later sung about in works such as "Shuishu" and "Yamato Monogatari." After that, Akiu Onsen was positioned as one of the royal hot springs, and came to be known as one of the "Three Imperial Hot Springs of Japan," along with Bessho Onsen (Shinano Onsen) and Nozawa Onsen (Inukai Onsen).
