Ota A naval general, Kuki the island of Jia Long's demise
Shijima is the final resting place of the naval general Kuki Yoshitaka. He built Toba Castle, known as the 'floating castle of the sea,' and constructed Japan's first iron-clad warship. He is famous for defeating the Mori navy (Murakami navy), which resisted Nobunaga. However, during the Battle of Sekigahara, the Kuki family was divided, with the father, Yoshitaka, fighting for the Western Army and his son, Moritaka, fighting for the Eastern Army. After the Western Army's defeat, Yoshitaka chose this island as his final resting place and committed suicide. As per his will, his head was buried on a hill overlooking Toba Castle, while his body was buried at the foot of the hill by his son Moritaka. These graves remain in the town of Wagu as the head mound and body mound.
