Popular local products from Ashizuri Onsen
"Ashizuri Kameokoshi" is a local snack that has been eaten for a long time. It has a simple taste, made by dicing sweet potatoes, frying them and solidifying them with starch syrup. It is harder and sweeter than imo kenpi, and was named after its resemblance to a turtle's shell. "Ashizuri Tsubaki Oil" is 100% pure camellia oil made from the fruit of the wild camellia, and is used for skin care and hair care. "Souda-bushi that gives you good dashi" is bottled musada-bushi, of which Tosashimizu is the largest producer in Japan. It is used as an all-purpose seasoning after adding soy sauce and leaving it for about two weeks to allow the aroma to transfer.

Hot Springs

Tosashimizu, a place associated with John Manjiro
Nakahama in Tosashimizu City is the birthplace of John Manjiro, the first Japanese man to set foot on American soil. At the age of 14, he was shipwrecked while out fishing, and was rescued by a US whaling ship, after which he volunteered to go to America. After returning to Japan, he used his knowledge and experience abroad to play an active role as a bridge between Japan and the US, including in the signing of the Treaty of Peace and Amity between the US and Japan. Today, Manjiro's birthplace has been restored in Tosashimizu, and there is a temporary grave, a Manjiro memorial, a bronze statue, and more. The John Manjiro Museum displays materials such as his handwritten English letters, and his name is also on display at the "Manjiro Footbath."
