Hot Spring Specialties

Local cuisine of Yugawara, associated with raccoon dogs
Yugawara has a legend that says that "a male and female raccoon dog who heal their wounds in hot springs become husband and wife and protect the hot springs as divine messengers." In reference to this raccoon dog and a familiar and witty raccoon song, a gourmet dish unique to the town, "Tan Tan Yakisoba," was born. It is characterized by a spicy flavor made possible by paste sesame and chili bean paste, and comes in two varieties: "Yugawara Citrus Style," which has the flavor of local lemon and pure orange, and "Onsen Tamago Style," which is served with a hot spring egg or a boiled egg or a fried egg. It is becoming increasingly popular as a casual B-class menu.

Hot Springs

A healing hot spring that appears in the Man'yoshu and other literature
Yugawara has long been known as a famous hot spring town, and the poet Sasaki Nobutsuna pointed out that it is the only hot spring to appear in the Man'yoshu, in the poem "Ashikari no Toi no Uta." Its hot springs and the surroundings are popular among writers and artists, and Kunikida Doppo used it as the setting for his short stories "From Yugawara" and "Yugawara Yuki," while Natsume Soseki wrote his final work "Light and Darkness" in Yugawara. Many famous people, including Akutagawa Ryunosuke, have found healing in Yugawara and used it to recharge their creative energy during their stay.
