Hot Spring Specialties

A long-established shop selling unchangingly delicious Hakone Onsen manju
Marushima Honten, located in front of Hakone Station on the Odakyu Line, has been in business for over 100 years. This long-established store sells the popular souvenir "Original Hakone Onsen Manju," which is made in store every morning using carefully selected ingredients. The traditional manju are oval-shaped and come in two varieties: a rich brown skin with a fragrant brown sugar flavor, and a simple white skin, and are filled with a generous amount of Hokkaido adzuki bean paste with the refined sweetness of koshian. They will also sell them individually, but there is also a tea shop on the second floor where you can take a break with a freshly made, fluffy manju.

Hot Springs

Ancient hot spring in Hakone visited by famous people in history
Hakone Soyu" in Yumoto was discovered by Shaku Jodobo in 738. The spring is located directly under Kumano Gongen, and was used as a foot-washing bath for Minamoto no Yoritomo and Hojo Soun during their pilgrimages to Kumano. In the Kamakura period (1185-1333), the Soga brothers also visited the area, and there are descriptions of Yumoto in the "Diary of Sixteen Nights" by Abutsu Nun and in a letter by Kanazawa Sadamasa, a Hojo retainer. Sounji Temple, left by Soun Hojo, became the family temple of the five generations of Hojo, and later Hideyoshi Toyotomi set up a camp at the temple for a long time, and at the same time, its fame as a hot spring became well known throughout the country. In the Edo period, Korin Ogata and Hiroshige Ando also visited the temple.
