Hot Spring Specialties

The dynamically changing scenery at Ubako Station
Hakone Ropeway, which connects Sounzan Station, through the spectacular Owakudani Station where the earth spews steam, to Ubako Station and Togendai Station at Lake Ashi, is the world's most popular ropeway route, having been certified by the Guinness World RecordsTM as the "most-ridden ropeway" in 2008 and 2009. Ubako Station, where Ubako Onsen is located, is a bend in the route and offers a spectacular view of Mt. Fuji. Forests of andromeda and beech trees spread out towards Lake Lake Ashi, and the scenery changes to a rugged volcanic landscape as you head towards Owakudani Station.

Hot Springs

Hot spring associated with "Kintaro," the hero of fairy tales
Kintaro Sakata, who is depicted with the Heian-period warlord Minamoto no Yorimitsu in "The Fairy Tale of Kintaro," is said to have come from Kintoki Mountain. Legend has it that he suffered an eye injury as a child and was cured by an ubako hot spring that was found by a crone at the behest of Hakone Gongen. There is a Hakone shrine and an ubako hall nearby that are associated with this legend. In the Meiji era (1868-1912), the area was popular as a therapeutic hot spring for eye diseases, and Soseki Natsume visited the area for eye treatment. Today, it has the atmosphere of a resort hot spring, but there remains one therapeutic bath that conveys the atmosphere of the old days, and Hakone it is the only one where you can enjoy a bedrock bath.
