Tourist Attraction Information

Hot Spring Specialties

A sand bath hot spring unlike any other in the world
Sand bath therapy has been practiced since the Genroku period, about 300 years ago. Its beneficial effects of promoting blood circulation and expelling waste products were already recorded in the Mikuni Meisho Zue, written over 150 years ago during the Tenpo era. Sand bath therapy spread further from the Meiji period to the beginning of the Showa period, and during the agricultural off-season, the spa was bustling with visitors from all over the country, not just from nearby areas. After the war, in 1985, a medical study by the Rehabilitation Department of the Kagoshima University School of Medicine confirmed its efficacy. In recent years, it has also proven effective in treating pets.

A hot spring that even hot spring lover Saigo Don visited
After losing the debate on the Korean Expedition, Saigo Takamori visited Unagi Onsen in Ibusuki at the end of Jan. 1874. He stayed there accompanied by his companions and hunting dogs. He would go out hunting and read books at night, and on rainy days he would play with the village children. There is now a monument and a small bronze statue of Saigo here. Saigo is said to have been quite fond of hot springs. According to documents from the Saigo Institute, he visited hot springs quite frequently in various places. The fact that there are relatively many hot springs in mountainous areas may be related to his hobby of hunting.
