The chewy texture with the delicious taste of wheat is the charm of Azukishima Somen
The history of Azukishima Soumen dates back about 400 years. It is said that the people of Azukishima Ikeda learned to make Sōmen in Miwa, Nara Prefecture, on their way back from a visit to Ise. In the 'Shozu Shimana Sho Zukai,' a document describing Azukishima at the end of the Edo period, the island's Soumen is praised as 'white in color and delicious. It is different from those produced in other regions and is the best.' The Soumen noodles from Ubushina in Azukishima are characterized by the use of the island's special sesame oil, which does not oxidize over time and retains its rich flavor.

Why Shodoshima became the island of olives
There is a surprising reason why Shodoshima became the Olive Island. In order to preserve and transport sardines and other fish caught in the vast fishing grounds that were acquired after Japan's victory in the Russo-Japanese War, they decided to manufacture canned goods in oil. This led to a need for olive oil, and in 1908, Kagawa (Shodoshima), Mie, and Kagoshima prefectures were designated as experimental olive cultivation areas. Of these, only Shodoshima produces olives. However, the cultivation of olives and the technology to squeeze and process them were all still a trial and error process, and it was through repeated trial and error that Shodoshima became the Olive Island it is today.
