小豆島のそうめんの歴史は、今から約400年前にさかのぼる。小豆島池田の人がお伊勢参りの帰りに、奈良県の三輪でそうめん作りを学んできたとされる。幕末の小豆島を述べた「小豆島名所図会」では、島のそうめんについて「色白くして美味なり。他国の産と異にして最よし」と書いてある。小豆島のそうめんは、島の特産品のごま油を使用しているのが特徴。ごま油は時が経っても酸化しない性質があり、おいしさを保つことができる。

小豆島がオリーブの島になった理由
小豆島がオリーブの島になったのには意外な理由がある。日露戦争の勝利で得た広大な漁場からとれるイワシ等を保存・輸送しようと、油漬けの缶詰を製造することになった。そこでオリーブオイルが必要となり、1908年に香川（小豆島）、三重、鹿児島の3県がオリーブ栽培試験地に指定された。このうち小豆島だけに実がなる。しかしオリーブの栽培も絞って加工する技術も全くの手探りで、試行錯誤を繰り返し今のオリーブの島となった。
