Hot Spring Specialties

Marugame Uchiwa Fan, a nationally designated traditional craft
Marugame Uchiwa fans are said to have started in the early Edo period as souvenirs for pilgrimages to Konpira, when they were made from unglazed fans with the character "kin" (gold) stamped on them. During the Tenmei era, Marugame Domain's Edo-based inspector Seyama Noboru encouraged low-ranking samurai to make them as a side job, and they continued to develop as a representative local industry of Marugame. Today, when people talk about Marugame Uchiwa fans, they generally mean "Otokotake Hiragara". The current production volume is about 83 million per year, accounting for 90% of the national market share, and in 1997 it was designated a national traditional craft.

Hot Springs

Konpira Highway and Tasuke Lantern
The Tasuke Lantern is a symbolic lantern at Marugame Port, which was bustling with visitors on their pilgrimage to Konpira. It marks the starting point of the old Konpira Five Highways and Marugame Highway, and visitors would use the Tasuke Lantern as a landmark to enter the port after the approximately 12km journey to the tall lantern in Kotohira. The Tasuke Lantern was completed in 1838 with donations from people living in Edo (a group of 1000 people). The pedestal is inscribed with the words "Edo Kochu" and the names of 1,357 donors and caretakers are inscribed on the side. It came to be called the Tasuke Lantern after Shiobara Tasuke, who donated the highest amount of 80 ryo among all the donors.
