Tourist Attraction Information

You can visit Kotohira Shrine, which enshrines the god of the sea, and enjoy a stroll along the approach to the shrine, which has flourished as a temple town since ancient times.

Highlights

The hot springs were discovered in 1997, and have become popular as a tourist spot where you can enjoy both worship and the hot springs. The water, which gushes out from three sources at about 400 liters per minute, is colorless, transparent, and feels smooth on the skin.

Hot Spring Specialties

Kotohira Town is the birthplace of udon restaurants
Udon noodles are said to have been brought to Kotohira from China by Kukai (Kobo Daishi) 1200 years ago. They were cultivated in Kukai's hometown of Sanuki, and spread throughout the country by people who came to make pilgrimages to Konpira-san. The record of this place being the birthplace of udon restaurants is also depicted in part of the Konpira Festival Screen housed at Kotohira Shrine. In a corner of a bustling town house, the scene of udon being made and what appears to be a kettle for boiling the noodles shows that udon restaurants were already operating there. If you feel a bit hungry during your stroll, a quick bowl of udon is a specialty of Kotohira.

Hot Springs

Visit Konpira-san for happiness
There are 785 stone steps from the entrance to the shrine to the main shrine, and 1368 to the inner shrine. On both sides of the staircase are lanterns, stone fences, souvenir shops, udon restaurants, and other establishments that delight the eyes of passersby. Once you have climbed up, step by step, you will find Kotohira Shrine, also known as "Konpira-san of Sanuki." This ancient shrine has been welcoming worshippers who make "Konpira pilgrimages" since the Edo period. Along with Kotohira Shrine, another famous spot in the town is the playhouse "Kyu-Konpira O-shibai (Kanamaru-za)." Every year, a performance called "Konpira Kabuki" is held here, which is popular with locals and tourists alike.
