Hot Spring Specialties

Natural ondol hut "Oiran bath"
A 5-6 minute walk from the inn at Sugawa Onsen is the "oiran bath," which has been in operation since the Edo period. It is a so-called ondol hut that utilizes geothermal energy. A straw mat is laid over the steam vent, the whole body is wrapped in a blanket, and the affected area is exposed to the steam while lying down. It has been loved by locals and mountain workers as a therapeutic bath, and is still a popular traditional therapy among hot spring visitors today. It soothes the tired bodies and minds of modern people who are under a lot of stress.

Hot Springs

The popular autumn foliage spot, Mt. Kurikoma
Mt. Kurikoma, 1,627.7m above sea level, is a dormant volcano that straddles four prefectures: Iwate, Miyagi, Akita, and Yamagata, and Sugawa Onsen is the starting point for Mt. Kurikoma. The area from Mt. Kurikoma, which has a primeval natural forest area, to the south of Mount Yakeishi is designated as part of the Kurikoma Quasi-National Park, and is known as the "Mt. Kurikoma Kurikoma-Mt. Tochigamori Forest Ecosystem Protection Area." The mountain is opened to the public every May., and many hikers flock to the area to see the fresh green leaves of beech trees from spring to early summer, and alpine plants in summer. In particular, the maples, rowan trees, and Japanese sumac trees are colorful in autumn.
