Tourist Attraction Information

In Hanamaki, you can experience the world of Kenji in many places, including the Miyazawa Kenji Memorial Museum. It is also refreshing to hike Mt. Hayachine, famous for its flowers.

Highlights

Hanamaki Minami Onsenkyo is the general name for eight hot springs (Matsukura Onsen, Shitodaira Onsen, Watari Onsen, Osawa Onsen, Yamanokami Onsen, Takakura Onsen, Namari Onsen, and Shin-Namari Onsen) scattered along the Toyosawa River in Hanamaki City, Iwate Prefecture. Because they are located along the river, they are referred to as Onsenkyo rather than Onsen-go.

Hot Spring Specialties

Kinkonzuke pickles become more flavorful the longer they are pickled
"Kinkonzuke" is a specialty of the Hanamaki region. It is a miso-pickled dish with carrots and kelp stuffed inside a gourd, and when sliced, its vibrant color whets the appetite. It is said to have been around since the end of the Edo period, and was a preserved food for farmers. It is said that it was likened to a couple celebrating their golden wedding anniversary, as it is aged in a pickling bed and the flavor improves the longer it sits, or that it was named after the shape of the sea cucumber (kinko) found on the Rikuchu coast. It is said that the longer it is pickled the better it tastes, so it is not uncommon to find it pickled for several years.

Hot Springs

Osawa Onsen, beloved by Kenji Miyazawa and others
Osawa Onsen is a single inn located in the Hanamaki Minami Onsen Gorge. The sign at the entrance is written by Aida Mitsuo. This hot spring has a comfortable open-air bath along the river, and was used by successive lords of the Nanbu domain during the Edo period. It was also frequently visited by writers such as Takamura Kotaro. Miyazawa Kenji also visited this hot spring many times as a boy, accompanied by his father, when it was the venue for seminars at the Hanamaki Buddhist Association. He must have really liked the hot spring, as he would also bring his students to bathe during his time as a teacher at Hanamaki Agricultural College.
