Hot Spring Specialties

"Wankosoba" is a famous dish said to have originated in Hanamaki
One theory is that the origin of wankosoba is an account of Lord Nanbu Toshinao's repeated refills of a small bowl of soba noodles served at Hanamaki Castle. Hanamaki's specialty wankosoba is a proud part of the local food culture, and the All Japan Wankosoba Championship is held in Hanamaki every year. Ten bowls of wankosoba is roughly equivalent to one bowl of kake soba noodles, which are served soaked in hot soba sauce. To eat a lot, it is important to coordinate with the waiter and avoid unnecessary movements, and there are records of people eating more than 250 bowls in five minutes.

Hot Springs

A vast garden filled with many different kinds of roses
Hanamaki Onsen Rose Garden is located on the site of a flower bed created by Miyazawa Kenji, and is home to around 6,000 roses of 450 varieties planted across an area of around 16,000m2. In 2010, an anniversary garden was also built, adding around 280 roses of 70 varieties, including six varieties such as the garden's original "Hot Hanamaki." The roses can be seen blooming until early Nov., and a Rose Festival is held from early Jun. to mid Jul., and the greenhouse can be enjoyed all year round. Other highlights include the sundial flower bed designed by Kenji and the rose varieties that Kenji loved.
