Hot Spring Specialties

Travertine formed over a long period of time by hot springs
A few hundred meters upstream from Geto Onsen, midway up Mount Yakeishi, upstream the Geto River, is a gigantic travertine known as Tengu Rock. Hot springs gush out from the slopes of the Geto River, and over the course of tens of thousands of years, the calcium carbonate contained in the water has deposited there. It is thought to be about 7.6 meters high and 25 meters in diameter at its base. It is the largest fountain tower made of naturally gushing travertine deposits in Japan, and was designated a national natural monument in 1941 and a special national natural monument in 1957.

Hot Springs

A strange kabuki tale about a hidden hot spring in Ezo
One theory is that Geto Onsen was discovered by Jikaku Daishi in 856. One theory is that the word Geto comes from the Ainu word for "cliff," and this region, which has a hidden history as Ezo, is home to many demon legends that are presumably likened to foreign tribes from the perspective of ancient capital residents. In a strange tale told in the kabuki play "Ibaraki," the demon Ibaraki Doji loses one of his arms to Watanabe Tsuna at the Rashomon gate in Kyoto, but later appears in the form of his aunt and gets the arm back. It is said that the sacred hot spring that treated the arm is Geto Onsen.
