Hot Spring Specialties

Onsen eggs are so popular they even come in boxes
A local specialty is the hot spring eggs, which are boiled in the spring waters of Awazu Onsen. The eggs are cooked at just the right temperature, resulting in soft, runny whites and a perfectly cooked yolk. The local way to eat them is with noodle soup or dashi soy sauce instead of salt. They are a popular souvenir.

Hot Springs

A symbol of Awazu, planted by the lord of Kaga
The giant tree standing in front of the long-established inn "Hoshi" is about 400 years old and is called "Komon Cedar". It is said that the third lord of the Kaga domain, Maeda Toshitsune, stopped by Awazu Onsen when visiting Natadera Temple and planted it himself. In the past, a person who held the rank of Chunagon was called "Komon" in Chinese, but since Maeda was Chunagon, the tree was named "Komon Cedar". When Awazu Onsen suffered a major fire in the Meiji era, it is said that the fire was stopped in front of this cedar, and since then, Komon Cedar has been considered the guardian deity of Awazu Onsen.
