Tourist Attraction Information

The view of autumn leaves from the Rokko-Arima Ropeway, which connects the hot spring resort with Mt. Rokko, is spectacular. Zuihoji Park and Tsuzumigataki Falls Park, two of the Arima Six Views, are also nearby.

Hot Spring Specialties

Arima Onsen, known for its "carbonated rice crackers," is said to be the birthplace of cider in Japan. In 1901, Sakai sake brewer Torii Komakichi produced gasified mineral water in Arima and sold it to the Kobe foreign settlement. In 1908, he also released "Arima Carbonated Flash Water," which contained added flavoring and sugar. In 2002, "Arima Champagne Cider," which had been discontinued in 1926, was revived for the first time in 76 years with "Arima Teppo-sui" (now renamed "Arima Cider"). It is characterized by its traditional strong carbonation.

Hot Springs

An ancient hot spring beloved and rebuilt by Toyotomi Hideyoshi
Arima Onsen, one of Japan's three oldest hot springs, is mentioned in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. In the 6th century, the emperor of the time also visited for a therapeutic bath. However, during the Sengoku period, the area was hit by two major fires and wars. During this time, Toyotomi Hideyoshi fell in love with Arima Onsen, where he was able to soothe his fatigue during his battles. When he took control of the country in 1583, he immediately came here to recuperate, and continued to visit thereafter accompanied by his wife Nene and concubines. He also carried out major construction work, such as renovating the hot spring source and building a bathhouse. The remains of Hideyoshi's bathhouse palace, which were excavated in recent years, are preserved and open to the public.
