Enjoy fresh "morning squid" at Yunokawa Onsen
Hakodate fishes for squid every year from Jun. to Dec., and in the harbor you can see squid fishing boats with many fishing lights hanging from them. During the peak season for squid fishing from summer to autumn, you can see the fishing lights from the windows of lodgings facing the sea. What's more, at Yunokawa Onsen you can eat incredibly fresh morning squid, only 1-2 hours after it was brought into the harbor in the morning. The Hakodate way is to eat the crunchy squid with ginger soy sauce, and squid somen noodles are also good. Hot Springs

Seiryoin's prophetic dream and Enomoto Takeaki's prophecy
When Matsumae Takahiro, the 9th lord of Matsumae clan, was a child, he fell seriously ill and it is said that his mother, Seiryoin, found this hot spring after receiving a prophecy in a dream. Takahiro recovered completely after bathing in the hot springs. As a token of gratitude, the clan rebuilt the Yakushido Hall and donated a crocodile bell, which is now preserved at Yukura Shrine. During the Battle of Hakodate, Enomoto Takeaki, commander-in-chief of the former Shogunate army, recuperated 250 wounded soldiers here. Before the fighting intensified, Enomoto himself would bathe in the warm waters and predict that "if we dig down about 100 feet, a large amount of hot water will come out," and later a well digger dug a new source of the spring.
