Highlights

A hot spring where you can fully enjoy the majestic nature, including views of Rishiri and Rebun Islands floating on the Sea of Japan. This unique hot spring contains boric acid and oil, which makes the skin smooth and is effective for treating skin inflammation and wounds due to its antibacterial properties.

Hot Spring Specialties

The octopus, a specialty of Soya Bay, is exquisite
A large amount of "Mizudako" (Pacific giant octopus) is caught around Soya Bay in Wakkanai. The cold waters and strong currents of the northern seas mean that an abundance of food is available, which allows the octopuses to grow in excellent quality, with some even weighing over 30kg. A Wakkanai specialty is "tako shabu," in which a large octopus, a local specialty, is flash-frozen alive and then sliced very thinly before being quickly boiled. The natural, unobtrusive sweetness of the octopus, the taste of the sea, the crunchy texture and the umami that spreads throughout the mouth are sure to impress. It is a delicious taste that the famous production area is proud of.

Hot Springs

An exhilarating drive along the west coast with a view of Rishiri Fuji
Wakkanai's west coast, where Wakkanai Onsen is located, stretches for over 20km along the sea from Cape Noshappu southward, making it an exhilarating area with the vast land and the Sea of Japan stretching out on both sides. Prefectural Route 106 is known as a refreshing route where you can drive while feeling the roundness of the earth. The sunset that dyes the sea with Rebun Island and Rishiri Fuji floating in it is impressive, and there are many photo spots such as Yuhigaoka Parking. There is a wintering ground for spotted seals, and there are also spots where you can see Rugosa roses and day lilies scattered around.
