オホーツク育ちのプリプリの鮭や鱒は絶品
9月上旬から11月のウトロ港は産卵期の鮭や鱒の水揚げで活気づく。この時期の北海道産白鮭は「秋味」といい、丸々育った知床産は味のよさで知られるほか、英名ピンクサーモンの樺太鱒「オホーツクサーモン」も知床産は脂のりが抜群。また、古来の手法で塩を振り熟成された「鮭の山漬け」も深い味だ。幻の鮭として名高い「鮭児」は全身トロのような肉質で珍重される。春～夏に揚がる「時不知（時鮭）」も脂のりが段違いの美味。

オホーツクの海に沈む太陽に染まる港町
北東にのびる知床半島の西側に佇むウトロは、知床連山より昇る朝日と、オホーツクを染める夕陽に照らされる町。「知床八景（※）」のひとつ「夕陽台」は、半島最大の港・ウトロ港の背後の高台にあり、行き交う船や岸に迫る流氷とともに、水平線までを見晴るかす景観地。日没前の空と海は金色を帯びて輝き、陽は下がるにつれあたりをゆっくりと赤く染めていく。夕暮れの空が色を深め紫に変わるまで目を離せない、感動の夕陽スポットだ。
