The plump salmon and trout raised in the Okhotsk Sea are exquisite
From early Sep. to Nov., Utoro Port comes alive with the landing of salmon and trout in the spawning season. Hokkaido white salmon caught at this time is called "Akiaji" (autumn flavor), and plump salmon from Shiretoko are known for their delicious taste. Shiretoko-produced Okhotsk salmon, a type of Sakhalin trout known in English as pink salmon, is also extremely fatty. In addition, "yamazuke salmon," which is salted and aged using traditional methods, has a deep flavor. "Sakeji," a famous and mythical salmon, is highly prized for its fatty meat. "Toki Shirazu (time salmon)," which is caught from spring to summer, is also extra delicious with its fatty content.

Shiretoko stretches to the northeast. Shiretoko Utoro, located on the western side of the peninsula, is a town illuminated by the rising sun from the mountain range and the setting sun that stains the Okhotsk Sea. One of the "Shiretoko Eight Views*" is "Yuhyodai," located on the hill behind Utoro Port, the largest port on the peninsula, where you can enjoy a panoramic view of the horizon with ships passing by and drift ice looming on the shore. Before sunset, the sky and sea glow with a golden hue, and as the sun goes down, the area slowly turns red. It is an impressive sunset spot where you cannot take your eyes off the sun until the sky deepens and turns purple at dusk.
