Hot Spring Specialties

A forest trail with beautiful columnar joint cliffs and waterfalls
It is believed that there used to be a 2,000m-class stratovolcano to the east of Daisetsuzan Mt. Asahidake, and a large amount of pyroclastic flow from a major eruption about 30,000 years ago deposited in the Chubetu River. The columnar joints formed as a result were eroded over about 10,000 years, creating the rugged yet beautiful Tenjinkyo landscape. In spring and summer, when the remaining snow from Mount Asahidake washes the stream and the trees of the virgin forest stand out against the magnificent views of the steep, oddly shaped rocks such as Amatsuiwa, Namidaiwa, and Shichifukuiwa, you can enjoy forest bathing and soak up plenty of phydontides on two courses: Takimidai and Hagoromo Falls.

Hot Springs

Hagoromo Falls, introduced by a great mountain-loving author
The literary great Omachi Keigetsu introduced Mount Daisetsu, its natural beauty and Hagoromo Falls to the whole country in his travelogue published in Chuokoron in 1921, which began with the words, "Climb Mount Fuji and speak of its height; climb Mount Daisetsu and speak of its size." Keigetsu traveled extensively and entered Mount Daisetsu Aug. that year, spending three nights on a route from the summit of Mount Asahi to Sugatami Pond. Day 4, he descended from the rugged Tennyo-ga-mine peak to Tenjinkyo Onsen and came across a spectacular waterfall. He named the waterfall "Hagoromo Falls," saying that it was "far higher than the Kegon Falls in Nikko."
