Hot Spring Specialties

The Ice Waterfall Festival is popular among Asian tourists
The famous winter event "Hyoubaku Festival" has been held since 1976 in Sounkyo Gorge, where even the waterfalls freeze over. The 10,000 square meter venue, which uses the riverbed of the Ishikari River, is lined with ice objects, tunnels, icicles, ice domes, and a variety of snow sculptures with a motif of nature, and the ice stage hosts events such as ice waterfall drumming. The ice observation deck is 15 meters high and offers a 360-degree view of the entire venue. At night, the structures are mysteriously lit up, and the ice-made "Hyoubaku Shrine" and the "Fire Banquet" fireworks that serve as the finale are particularly popular.

Hot Springs

Omachi Keigetsu, the writer who made Sounkyo Gorge famous
The hot spring was discovered at the end of the Edo period, and was named Shioya Onsen in 1900. In 1913 it became Kunizawa Onsen, with several hot spring inns in operation. The Meiji and Taisho period poet Omachi Keigetsu visited the area during the Taisho period, and wrote in his travelogue "From Sounkyo Gorge to Daisetsuzan" (From Mt. Daisetsu) "Climb Mt. Fuji and talk about the mountain's height, climb Mt. Daisetsu and talk about the mountain's size," which helped spread the name. In the 1950s it was developed as a hot spring resort, and was renamed Sounkyo Gorge Onsen. It is popular as a base for climbing Mt. Daisetsu, and is the largest hot spring resort in the Daisetsu mountain range, with approximately 3 million visitors per year.
