Hot Spring Specialties

Lake Shikaribetsu 's specialty is Dolly Varden dishes
Lake Shikaribetsu is home to a subspecies of Dolly Varden trout called Miyabei char. This species is endemic to the Lake Shikaribetsu and has been designated a natural monument. Currently, Shikaoi Town is responsible for hatching the trout, and fish farmed at private fish farms are served at two hot spring hotels in Lake Shikaribetsu and restaurants in the town. Growing up in mineral-rich water, Dolly Varden trout do not have the strong flavor typical of river fish, and have a light taste that is delicious whether grilled with salt or fried. They are also sold in sweet simmered form as a souvenir.

Hot Springs

Valuable experiences you can do in Lake Shikaribetsu
The winter specialty of Lake Shikaribetsu, which freezes completely in winter, is "Shikaribetsu Lake Kotan". Kotan is an Ainu word meaning village, and during this period, villages are built on the shores of lakes and scattered with igloos and ice buildings. There are "Ice Bar", "Ice Lodge", "Ice Chapel", etc., and an open-air bath on ice has also appeared. The dressing room is also made of snow and ice, and there are times for mixed bathing, men-only, and women-only. The hot springs on the ice, which can only be entered here, are free to use, so I would definitely like to experience them.
