A wide selection of Yukijin souvenirs
The 18m-tall welcoming demon statue, known as "Yukijin," the guardian deity of hot springs, stands at the exit of Noboribetsu Higashi IC, as does the Yukake Onizo and Nembutsu Oni statues in the hot spring town. These demon-themed goods are popular as souvenirs. They include the ever-popular "Oni no Tegata" (demon's hand print), which has the same design as the olden days, the "Oni proverb tin badges" with slogans such as "Even the eyes of a demon can bring tears," the stylish "Japanese tapestries," the standard straps, and more. Among them, the "Wish-granting stick," a demon's iron club that comes in two sizes, large and small, and four colors, is especially popular among high school girls.

Hot Springs

A historic medicinal bath beloved by the Ainu people
It has long been popular among the Ainu people as a medicinal bath, and in 1845 Matsuura Takeshiro, the man who gave Hokkaido its name, visited and wrote about its charms. Later, Takimoto Kinzo, the father of hot spring therapy, built a hot spring hotel and prepared the roads, laying the foundations for what we know today. It was later designated as a resort for wounded soldiers from the Russo-Japanese War, and its name spread throughout the country. Here in Jigokudani, there is a legend that the lid of the cauldron of hell opens once a year, and King Enma appears in the hot spring town accompanied by red and blue demons, and the Noboribetsu Hell Festival is the largest festival in Noboribetsu that is associated with this legend.
