Hot Spring Specialties

Free your mind and body in the open-air bath by the lake
There are various open-air baths dotted around the shores of Lake Kussharo. One of the most famous is Sunayu, where hot springs gush out as soon as you dig into the sand on the lakeside. Other hot springs include Ikenoyu, a large pond-like bath about 2km south of Sunayu, Wakoto Onsen on the Wakoto Peninsula, and Kotan no Yu along the road connecting Wakoto Peninsula and Sunayu. All of these baths are right in front of the lake, allowing you to enjoy a bath that makes you feel as if you are one with nature. In winter, it's also fun to bathe while watching the swans.

Hot Springs

Ice ridges and swans are the seasonal sights of winter at Lake Kussharo
The ice that freezes over Lake Kussharo in the harsh winter season expands and contracts repeatedly due to the temperature difference between day and night, causing cracks to form under pressure, and by Feb. to early Mar. it has grown into a gigantic ice hill vein the size of a person's height. It can sometimes reach lengths of up to 10km, and the thunderous sound of the ice cracking can be heard as it forms. Meanwhile, on the shores of Sunayu, Kotan, Nibushi and other areas that do not freeze over due to the hot springs, you can see many swans that fly in from Siberia between early Nov. and early Apr., and food is also sold at the shops, allowing you to enjoy their graceful appearance up close.
