Hot Spring Specialties

Powdered soup made with rare Hokkaido onions
"Jozankei Gorge Onion Soup," sold at Jozankei Gorge Accommodation and the tourist association, is a powdered soup made from a blend of Sapporo yellow onions and Shiretoko chicken, which has become a popular souvenir due to its taste and rarity. Sapporo yellow onions are difficult to cultivate and are produced and distributed in small quantities, but they are an exceptional product that has been recognized as an "Ark of Taste" by the Slow Food International Headquarters, a food heritage site. When cooked, the spiciness disappears and the onion becomes sweet, making it ideal for stews. The soup has a deep flavor and goes well with Japanese, Western, and Chinese dishes.

Why there is "Kappa Road" and kappa statues
When you walk through Jozankei Gorge Onsen town, you will see kappa statues everywhere. This comes from the fact that the kappa legend has been passed down in Jozankei Gorge. The legend originated at Kappa Pool, which can be seen from Futami Suspension Bridge, a scenic spot upstream of the Toyohira River that runs through the hot spring town, and it is said that a young man who was fishing there was suddenly pulled into the river long ago. On the night of the first anniversary of his death, when he was unable to be rescued, the young man appeared in his father's dream and told him, "I am now living happily with the kappa's wife and child," and the name Kappa Pool was born.
