The underground water of Mt. Daisetsu springs up in a sacred place for the Ainu.
Higashikawa Town, rich in spring water, is the only town Hokkaido without a running water system. You can freely draw underground water from Mt. Daisetsu, rich in natural minerals, from the intake point at the source rock in Daisetsu Asahidake Water Park, or from the spring in the forest about 300m along the promenade. The spring area within the town has been sacred to the Ainu since ancient times, and this spring water is of particularly high quality, with a constant water temperature of about 7°C, making it possible to draw water from the intake point even in winter. People with plastic bottles and tanks visit the town all year round in search of the pure blessings of Mt. Daisetsu.

The highest peak in the province is a garden where the gods play with flowers
The highest peak of Hokkaido, Daisetsuzan Mt. Asahidake, which is named one of the "One Hundred Famous Mountains of Japan*", Ezo rhododendron blooms around late May. when the snow melts, and summer alpine plants gradually bloom from early Jun. when the snow gorges can be seen. There is one of the largest colonies of alpine plants in Japan around Susogidaira, with chinguruma, Ezo kozakura and Ezo no Tsugazakura showing their neat appearance. The sight of all the flowers blooming at once in the short summer is exactly what the Ainu call "Kamuimintara" (the garden where the gods play). The unique and precious plants are also a highlight of the area.

  • This refers to the 100 mountains in Japan that are introduced in the book "One Hundred Famous Mountains of Japan" (first published in 1964) by mountaineer Kyuya Fukada.
