Hot Spring Specialties

Cute Marimo-like sweets are appearing one after another
"Marimu Yokan" is a product that was introduced to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the designation of Marimo as a National Special Natural Monument, and is a sister product of the well-known specialty "Marimo Yokan." Like "Marimo Yokan," it is filled into a round, expanding rubber ball, and when you poke it with a toothpick, the rubber ball pops, revealing a yokan filled with fresh cream. The harmony of the bean paste and cream is exquisite, making it a popular item. Another popular item is the rich, custard-flavored "Marimo Pudding," also molded into a round rubber ball, which is served in a tall bowl and topped with caramel.

Hot Springs

A sacred event that allows you to experience Ainu culture and worldview
In 1858, when Matsuura Takeshiro explored the area, there are records that the Ainu people living in the area were using the hot springs, and Lake Akan is adjacent to one of the largest Ainu kotans in Hokkaido. At Lake Akan Ainu Theater, the Iomante Fire Festival, which is registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, is held for a limited time, conveying the precious Ainu culture to the present. Iomante means "I (thing)" + "Omante (to send)", and is a heroic soul-sending festival in which divine spirits in the form of animals are sent to heaven.
