Hot Spring Specialties

Local gourmet food that lets you enjoy the culinary bounty of Abashiri
The local gourmet dish "Okhotsk Abashiri Zangi Bowl," popular with all ages, is made by marinating Okhotsk salmon (Sakhalin trout) in natural white fish soy sauce, deep frying it, garnish it with locally grown yam and mountain wasabi, and serving it with Abashiri shellfish soup, and is reasonably priced at less than 1,000 yen. Also, "Abashiri Moyoro Nabe," named after the ancient culture at the mouth of Abashiri River, is a luxurious dish that uses Okhotsk salmon, minced fish, and Abashiri 's seafood and mountain delicacies in an earthenware-style pot. The umami of the ingredients is accentuated by Okhotsk salt and white fish soy sauce, making it an exquisite dish.

Hot Springs

See the drift ice that appears in Sea of Okhotsk in winter
44 degrees north latitude is the southern limit of the seasonal sea ice area. From late Jan., when the drift ice that has moved south by the East Karafuto Current approaches, drift ice sightseeing boats depart daily from Abashiri Port. Like the Antarctic research vessel Shirase, the boats move forward using the weight of the boat to break the ice blocks, and in addition to the beautiful and mystical scenery of the drift ice that spreads out before your eyes, cheers erupt at the spectacular sound and rumble that erupts when the ice, up to about 1m in size, breaks. The sight of northern creatures, such as white-tailed eagles and seals that sometimes appear, gives a sense of the grandeur of nature and the resilience of life.
