Hot Spring Specialties

A drinking fountain in the hot spring town that you'll want to enjoy while strolling
Shima Onsen has long been said to be good for the stomach and intestines if you drink it, and good for the skin if you bathe in it. There are several drinking springs in the hot spring town, and many people stop by during their walks. The Yuzuriha Drinking Spring, located in front of the National Guest House in the Hinatami district, is a spacious octagonal gazebo with benches where you can relax. At the Shio no Yu Drinking Spring opposite the Shima Post Office, hot water overflows from a cute frog-shaped spout, and there is also a stone drinking basin at the entrance to the Shima Onsen Association, where water is supplied from the same spring source as the Shio no Yu Drinking Spring.

Hot Springs

The history of Shima Onsen, famous for its medicinal properties, and two ancient legends
Shima Onsen was one of the first hot spring resorts for the nation. It was recognized in 1954 for its outstanding efficacy and other criteria. It is said that Tamura Jingoro opened a hot spring inn in 1563, and his grandson also opened a hot spring inn in Shinyu, but there are also stories from ancient times that Sakanoue no Tamuramaro opened the hot springs when he conquered the Emishi, and that during the Enryaku era, Hyuganokami Usui Sadamitsu, a vassal of Minamoto no Yorimitsu, discovered the "Omusou no Yu" hot springs that healed the ailments of Shima through divine revelation. Sadamitsu is said to have named this area Shima no Sato and left behind the "Hyuganokami Sadamitsu Temple Medicine Master Ruri Nyorai."
