Hot Spring Specialties

Dam curry with each store's unique character
Minakami Town is the source of the Tone River and has five dams of different styles. "Minakami Dam Curry" was created in Oct. 2009 as a town revitalization project that takes advantage of this characteristic. The construction of the dams and dam sites are all uniform, and the individuality of each restaurant is reflected in the seasoning and decoration of the reservoir. The catchphrase is "Caution! Is this a dam? Or curry?" and it is served at about 10 restaurants. It is a must-try menu item when visiting Minakami Onsen.

Hot Springs

Minakami Onsen, beloved by literary figures
Until the Shimizu Tunnel was opened, the area was an isolated place in deep mountains and valleys, and was loved by writers for its harmony of hot spring atmosphere and the beauty of the valley. This place became known for Wakayama Bokusui's "Minakami Travelogue." He is said to have stayed at Kanadaya and ate two plates of grilled river fish with miso, saying it was delicious. The storehouse where Bokusui stayed can still be seen at the inn today. Yosano Akiko wrote about the clear mountain stream as "the young Tone River that shoots arrows through it." Other people who visited the area include Dazai Osamu, Kitahara Hakushu, and Saijo Yaso.
